Heh. Here's a fun idea. Power Ping. Basically, it's a one shot radar ping that detects magical items all around the caster. Second level spell. Any thoughts?

Is that a real spell? Google shows no hits and I'm still what you'd call a bit of a noob.

Assuming it is, that sounds like it could be a broken level of useful. Need to find a spy? Ping! That guy has way too many magic items. Hello, new number one suspect. What that guy doing with all that enchanted loot? Oh, he's "donating" it to me. Lovely. Which guy is the bandit leader so the Rouge can stealth in and kill him from the shadows in order to hit the rest of his men with a moral penalty. Ping! It's that guy in the middle left right next to the men with magic teeth.

"Rogue ≠ Rouge"
I believe Raxon's just invented it.
I'd pick a different name, but it sounds alright to me. I've never played Pathfinder, and my practical experience with 3.5 is limited, but that seems consistent with their spellcasting power progression. Granted, it's situational enough that hardly anyone would prepare it with a 2nd level slot until they didn't need the slot anyway, but maybe it could be a 1st level spell in a domain or three.
Oh, and rouge is a type of makeup. The frequency with which I remind folks of that has led me to make most of my rogues carrying rouge to act as cosmetics merchants, though.

Just an idea I had. Inspired by today's comic. Situational, but lifesaving. If you guys have better ideas for a name, I'm all ears.
Zilfallion 9th Apr 2015, 11:25 PM edit delete reply
It's also a color. Probably the same color as the makeup, but I've always known it primary as a color.

I'm dyslexic. swapping two letter like that happens to me all the time, and it's worse when the swap makes sense in my head, and even worse when both spellings are words. And yet even more heinous when I have reason to mix them up, and in this case because of Rouge the Bat, who is quite clearly a rogue, to say nothing of the fact that to me at least the spellings better match their pronunciations when swapped, I mix them up a lot.

Seems okay to me, except perhaps being a Second Level spell and that's because I never played enough D&D to really get a hang for Spell Levels. Is it guaranteed to never fail (nothing "resists" being detected and you can't somehow misread it)? Does it leave a crystal clear after image in the caster's mind (or displayed like a magical HUD for all to see)? Can you have it ignore stuff you are already aware of so that the caster isn't overwhelmed because each party member has a few magic items?

If it really is just a "ping", where the caster gets just a second or so radar map like image in his or her head, showing the nearby magic items, with range based on caster level, that might even be a bit high of a level. If the spell's duration is even just a few combat rounds and/or it gives details and/or the information is easy to convey to your team (magical HUD), allows you to exclude known magical items (so you can optionally detect them if needed but ignore them most of the time), it might even qualify for a higher level... unless Lv2 is supposed to be pretty good but not great.

Wait, is "Analyze Magic" different from "Detect Magic" in Pathfinder? That also might affect how it is priced. Any other GURPS players out there? I know there is a way with just the Basic Set rules to build this, I'm just not confident in my ability to do so. XD
Raxon 9th Apr 2015, 12:38 PM edit delete reply
It only detects magic items. It will tell you how many and in what places. Range would probably vary with level.

And I suppose it woyld be blocked by the standard antimagic field, but a gap would be much more suspicious than any magical items. A bunch of magical items could easily be some young mage with some magic tools. An antimagic field woukd necessarily mean something very powerful and potentially dangerous.
DtDoom 10th Apr 2015, 6:58 PM edit delete reply

"What if"
the spell doesn't detect that it's being blocked? Only that there are no items there? That's not suspicious at all, unless of course you're in a building, and there have been magic items in absolutely every single other room you've searched... Which isn't likely unless it is the home of a retired adventurer, or really powerful wizardy type.

Make it a magical item and I will buy it XD
renwald 9th Apr 2015, 12:43 PM edit delete reply

Wouldn't that just be arcane sight? A level 3 spell if i remember correctly.
Raxon 9th Apr 2015, 3:29 PM edit delete reply
Similar, but a one ping AoE spell centered on the caster
Book O Dragons 9th Apr 2015, 5:09 PM edit delete reply

I wouldn't use a 2nd level slot unless it had medium range or more. Close range I'd use a 1st level slot on a caster and make hell with a rogue. Wands anyone?
Raxon 9th Apr 2015, 10:58 PM edit delete reply
I would guess... Base range of ten feet, plus five feet per caster level?

Seems legit.
Book O Dragons 11th Apr 2015, 12:13 PM edit delete reply

25 + 5/2 caster levels. I play 3.5 and that is what I was thinking.
Malroth 10th Apr 2015, 1:14 AM edit delete reply
the infinite 0 lv spells rule from pathfinder can interact VERY strangely with certian older rules from 3.0-3.5 especially with shadowcraft Mage Shinannagins, Combine Arcane thesis "Silent Image" with Heighten spell, Earth Spell and as much metamagic as you can and you wind up with a 0th lv illusion spell capable of duplicating the effects of any 5th lv or below summoning or Evocation spell and causing a will save to Disbelive that causes people who make their saves to take more damage than the ones who fail.

Pretty sure you only get unlimited casting of spells with a base level of zero and no metamagic. I'd certainly rule it that way.
DtDoom 10th Apr 2015, 7:00 PM edit delete reply

"Metamagic feats raise the level of the spell"
and thus raise the level of the slot required to cast it.
Malroth 11th Apr 2015, 11:36 AM edit delete reply
If your metamagic reducers reduce it by more than your metamagic modifies it by it still occupies a 0th lv slot.
