Dartboard choices!

Animal companions as scouts isn't their biggest forte. Unlike Familiars who have heightened Intelligence and an innate understanding of their masters wants and Needs, the Animal companion is just a stronger, better armored version of the base creature. A hawk sent on a scouting mission would likely give you a report of every squirrel rabbit and prarie dog it found but probably wouldn't even mention the orc army camped there.

Boon Companion and a 3 int score would actually say otherwise. Then they become better armored versions of the base creature with the ability to understand complex commands and the ability to scout and count.

Though they'll probably be crap at counting.

int 3 is still todler/mentally challenged level of int. you would be mad to trust it's scouting to much.

as Malroth said, it's likely to tell you ALL about the fluffy squirrel, and then another squirrel came, and...

and that is provided that you can actually speak with the beast. for a druid, this is fine, but a ranger can't unless he uses a spell for it. and int 3 and no education means it is extremely unlikely to know how to write common...

sure, it knows complex commands, but just about as much as a really well trained dog can. and that is actually a lot, so you will have no problem ordering it to open the door, go to the fridge, get you a beer, and then close the door. trained dogs can be amazing

Meanwhile the wolf/dog would just be "SQUIRREL!"

...this is an excuse to add a cat to the strip. I think that makes the choice obvious. ;)

first D&D game I was in, friend of mine had a dilophosaur companion, then took Leadership, awakened the dilo, had him as the cohort, and got a deinonychus companion
