I have a feeling they're going to die

If they were named characters they might have a shot at survival with everyone waiting politely as they go through their tutorial. But as they are 'first generation' cohorts, if that's an even remotely appropriate way to address them, yeah, afraid I must concur. They sooooo dead.

What's even worse is vampire chaining. You can get a reverse pyramid of HD, with the weakest one being the boss, then you can go up to double HD every iteration (or get two minions of equal HD, etc).
There is only the slight problem where if you kill the one on top things might go crazy... plus they're vampires so they're not great for day battles.

Vampire Thrallherd chaining, can probably get the entire kingdom vamped or mindslaved.

The problem with this idea is it will only work in certain settings. Generally in D&D you don't find many high level characters, let alone enough to pull off something like this. As they have already stated, they won't get XP because they are cohorts so that won't help push them towards getting the leadership feat either.
