So...

On the one hand the party did opt to engage in the fight and the foes weren't hidden or anything. On the other hand they are of a CR far above what they're capable of reasonably handling or that would be reasonably found in this area.

I would ask if the GM's should pull the plug but, if any of us was the GM we'd have already made the decision by merely including it as an option. You can slap a god-NPC down and make it clear that they should fight it, but if they do (especially if it's someone they wouldn't even confront normally) it's their funeral.

On the other hand, merely making it show up means if they don't engage it first to defend themselves, they're just wasting turns if you decide to have it kill them anyway... And it wasn't entirely clear what CR it was just from looking at it since it ranged from appropriateish (around CR9+ and a wizard) to literally oneshot the party range (CR 17+ and a wizard)
