4th lv enervation is WAY better than 9th lv energy drain. 4ths are competing with ice storm and animate dead. 9ths are competing with create demiplane, wish and foresight.

Ah, but Create Demiplane isn't a competitor if you're a wizard. It's still a very good spell, but with a 6 hour cast time (for Greater, the 9th level version) it doesn't compete for prepared slots.

Wish is very useful for many things, but costs as much as true resurrection.

Foresight is very nice too.

However, nothing stops an 18th level + wizard from preparing one Energy Drain, Wish, and Foresight...

On the other hand, Energy Drain wouldn't stop someone from casting higher level spells- explicit in the energy drain rules is not losing prepared spells. The lower caster level might make it harder to overcome SR and make the spells overall weaker, and the lower attacks and saves wouldn't be pleasant, but it wouldn't have any significant affect against Dominate Monster which is nearly a save-or-die spell (and available to summoners)- though Mind Blank makes the save rather easy.

That said, Wail of the Banshee, if 9th level spells are available, is just superior to enervation/energy drain- Death Ward confers immunity to the latter, but only a +4 against death spells. A wizard, even with average (4) on 20 HD, and 16 con will still die to a failed save there. Or if the wizard only has 12 con they die to Power Word Kill with *no* save.

I still feel the basic concept applies. The spell is competing with others which may be better/more practical.

Also, the group was supposed to fight someone who could cast 9th level spells? WHAT THE HECK?! He could have just fireballed them to death on round 1!
