You know, I've always wondered. When you 'clone' yourself can you give yourself a few... 'cosmetic'... upgrades? You know... since you're getting a whole new body anyways why not... erm... upgrade a few things?

Depends on the system. Short version is "Crunch versus Fluff".

Does the clone process involved even allow for such a change?

Does the change make your character significantly better looking?

Does it help with pretending not to be yourself?

Does it grant even a small, only sometimes applicable bonus?

Not with just the clone spell- "The clone is physically identical to the original"
That said, if you can cast 8th level sorcerer/wizard spells you can probably do any... upgrades... you want.

A bit random, but what if you were under the effects of a minor transformation at the time? Like, you already cast something like Disguise Self for a few... "small cosmetic upgrades", and then cast Clone? Would you clone your original image, or the modified image?

Illusion spells like Disguise Self spells don't change your physical form, so they would have no effect.
Polymorph spells sort of do that, however, so Alter Self might work...
Again, though, it's an 8th level spell so it's not out of line for it to have non-mechanical changes if you specifically try for that.
