Seems legit.

Story time is about a time when you or your players leveled up or spent some XP or improved their characters mid combat... or right when you revealed the challenge before them.

I've had DMs say that you can't just level up with a "ding" - that you have to actually go back to town and train. What has all this experience been for if not training?

Of course, this only applied to certain classes - the fighter needs to go to fighter school in town, but the ranger can level up even if we're in the wilderness.

It's certainly fair to not allow level ups in combat, and usually taking some time off from adventuring, but that isn't always an option. So, sometimes you have to wait, and sometimes you level up whenever. Depends significantly on the DM.

In one game I was in... our characters didn't sleep at level 15... We were level 14, leveled up, then spent and intense day raiding a fortress and rescuing our cleric's dragon boyfriend, and by the end we were level 16.

In relation to the comic, since the GM is throwing highly level inappropriate encounters at them, they need to do everything they can to combat it, including leveling up in combat which is probably cheating :P

My original gaming group had two members who took turns running campaigns or being players. They both had been players under a GM that had a bit of a reputation for being a player killer.

I think that led to them being averse to scoring a true, can't come back from it kill unless they thought the player really had it coming. This led to one GM allowing my paladin-esque character in a GURPS 3e campaign to buy an extremely narrow focus form of Invulnerability after some bad rolls meant I was going to get hit by a guaranteed fatal attack. The attack was something clearly antagonistic towards my character and his faith, and I was sitting on quite a lot of CP because of saving for something else. I was more than thrilled to cash it in for a trait that saved my life (and that I didn't know I would be allowed to purchase).

The other time something like this happened was mostly because the GM thought it was funny. Non-combat situation for the same campaign where some two of the other players were just finishing up a series of rolls to translate some ancient documents. Fitting my character's theme, I was allowed to buy a divinely fueled ability to read/write other languages. The timing was just to annoy the other guys. XD

You have one class level and one feat to go from the most useless class in existance to one that can contribute to encounters (since your fighter class isn't doing jack or diddily) you have a cha of 7, and your INT and WIS don't seem high enough to cast either.

Have we seen his stats? I was pretty certain the only one we knew of was the 17 strength (because it was turned into an 18 at 4).

There's no reason to think he has a dump stat or that it's Charisma even if he does. I'd say wisdom, if he had picked one. But even without he can have a decent array.

Never mind, found it myself. Hrrrm... Well that kind of makes it unlikely he'd pick paladin. They seemed to be foreshadowing a fighter archetype but I can't see how flexible feats would help right now.
