There's generally two trains of thought.

One: Sneaky sneak because I'm super sneaky
Two: I have a -6 to Stealth, so screw-it, I'm just walking into the obvious ambush.

Well, at least in any games I've ever run.

Pfft -6 stealth? They can do better, try -15. That means 25% of the time you are as loud as a battle by yourself, just walking around.

They actually have a good Dex modifier, just heavy armor and shield.

There's not much point in going over +1 dex mod if you're using full plate though. Well, Mithral makes that... +3? but in that case the armor check penalty is less.

Believe me, I've tried to understand some of the decisions that player has made, but some of them just baffle me.
