Somebody must have accidently gained some light side points like in a bioware game and now has to act stupid evil to keep his dark side bonuses.

How are you ever going to get level upped minions?
Also, this reduces your leadership score.

There's ways around it sometimes. Pathfinder in particular has the Vile Leadership feat, which rewards being callous and ruthless towards your followers. Killing them even grants a bonus, as long as it's under 20% of their own forces.
