If he were retraining to a class with retraining synergy, it would be 5 days per class level, putting him out of action for a month (which is a long time in adventurer's terms)! Dropping Martial Master means he's only forfeiting one class feature, which is a nice and quick 5 days.
But hey, whatever. He's got the handbook now. You keep doing what you're doing Phaedrus, and you'll have all the joy of stabbing with that spear in a nice flexible package.
