Don't know what the in-universe reason is, but based on this and the next strip, it seems a lot like an allegory for the ways people can end or leave a game.
In this case, the experience of playing with Fowle as GM seemed to be so awful that the guy just quit gaming altogether, which is one of the saddest things to hear for a gamer.
